Serena Williams enters the court at the US Open, perhaps for the last time. After announcing his retirement in the September 2022 issue of Vogue, the tennis legend is gearing up for what could be his final tournament appearance in Queens, New York. And she does it with great style. Williams’ US Open 2022 outfit isn’t just any on-court look, although she’s had plenty. It’s full of meaning and it’s a sartorial tribute to the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.
To play her first match at the 2022 US Open, Serena Williams wore a black, sheer-panelled Nike dress covered in sparkles, People reports. The sparkly look sports a six-layered skirt to honor her previous six US Open titles – and it’s a fitting ensemble as she strives for a record 24th Grand Slam title.
Her sneakers are just as glamorous. The designer chose the NikeCourt Flare 2 shoes, adorned with 400 combined diamonds, her initials inscribed on the medial side and an ornate swoosh. The crystal-embellished outfit, which Williams co-designed, is a nod to the costumes traditionally worn by figure skaters. “Inspired by the graceful competition dresses worn by figure skaters, the embellished bodice and skirt put Serena in the spotlight and allow her freedom of movement,” Nike said in a statement.
Olympia Ohanian, who is known for making her own style statements, matched her mother in a sparkly Nike outfit and beaded hairstyle with special meaning.
