Support League of Bend’s Cinderella’s Closet offers teens prom dresses

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Formal dresses can be prohibitively expensive for local teens hoping to experience their high school proms. But did you know there’s a boutique here in Bend that lends new and lightly worn party dresses to local teenagers for proms and homecomings?

Since 2018, Assistance League of Bend has purchased short and long formal dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry which can be borrowed free of charge. Dresses were donated by Macy’s, the Bridal Suite and various community supporters.

“We had the opportunity to obtain 90 dresses from an Assistance League chapter in Southern California that ran a similar program. When this chapter decided to discontinue its program, Assistance League of Bend jumped at the chance to open Cinderella’s Closet here in central Oregon,” remarked Janet Martin, Vice President of Philanthropic Programs. With this humble beginning, coupled with a generous grant from a community donor, Cinderella’s Closet now boasts an inventory of over 800 dresses.

“In addition to saving the expense of buying a prom dress or going home, I think students appreciate the program’s reuse and recycling ethos. And when most girls only wear a dress once, why spend money when you can borrow one for free? Kim Rush, president of Cinderella’s Closet added.

Another added advantage of the store is that it offers many unique dresses which reduces the possibility of seeing the same dress twice on any given occasion. They also received donations of brand new Mary Kay and Thrive Causemetics makeup, as well as shoes, jewelry and other accessories which are all available when visiting the store.

As schools hold proms for the first time in two years, Cinderella’s Closet is delighted to be open on the following days and times: Wednesdays April 13, 20 and 27 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and Saturday April 16, 23, 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The store is located at 210 SE Urania Lane in Bend.
